21 things my dad taught me
Dear Daddy, thank you for teaching me:
- that real men are strong, caring and sensitive too
- that one can never say “I love you” too often
- that little girls’ kisses come in two flavors: strawberry shortcake or peaches and cream
- that romance is dancing on your daddy’s boots
- that life is a gamble, so it’s best to enjoy the good times
- that a good marriage involves more giving than taking
- that every couple should rub each others’ feet once in awhile
- that a drive in the country can heal many hurts
- that thunderstorms should be witnessed from the front porch
- that dogs go along with you to work
- that every girl should know how to use tools and change a tire
- that relationships matter more than business (or rather, they are business)
- that investments aren’t all about money
- that ketchup improves just about anything
- that you never pass through a town without looking up a cousin
- to give a friendly wave whether you know them or not
- to always factor in a couple extra hours for visiting
- that every major milestone deserves a great party
- that good sons honor and care for their parents
- to stand up for your rights, even if you don’t know what will happen next
- that humor and optimism will get you through the tough times
Just a few lessons from my wise and wonderful Dad.
With much, much love,
your (not so) little girl

This is lovely. Sounds a bit like my Dad. Don’t agree with the ketchup though!

Mucho Love, Dad
What a nice tribute to your dad! Love the picture. I think I’ll make a list of things my day taught me today.
One more to add:
Hoeing cotton weeds, painting pecan tree trunks or picking chile are great motivators for a college education.
Pam, I love your list! Mom & Dad told me about it when I called today – you really made their day with this post.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. He really is an awesome dad (and grandpa)–not perfect, but always loving– and I can’t wait to visit him next week.
Your dad sounds like a gem, like mine was. I enjoyed reading his wisdom — thanks for sharing it with us!

A lot of great sayings and memories of fathers (and others we love) are interpreted, augmented, edited and embellished by loving children. That’s some of the reason that we love them more, the older we get;
this represents the wisdom of DADS plus the wisdom of his children. I hope the reflections of my children on me grow, enlarge and become lovingly embellished, especially in areas of weaknesses and the times I have been too slow to grow, mature, react, give and share. And may God guide us both/all!
